The SHARON® system, developed by the Dutch Environmental
consultant Grontmij, NV, converts nitrogenous compounds
in wastewater to elemental Nitrogen. m2t
Technologies is Grontmij’s exclusive North American
licensee for the SHARON® system. As shown in the schematic
in the “More Information” section, Sharon is
a side stream system designed to treat the internal plant
recycle streams that contain high nitrogen concentrations
(i.e., TKN). These streams generally constitute ~30% of
the total plant TKN load. Like the InNitri® system,
SHARON is optimized to maximize nitrifier and denitrifier
growth rates. SHARON can essentially remove all of the nitrogen
in the internal plant side streams by converting it to elemental,
gaseous nitrogen. In many cases, this provides plant effluent
quality meeting NPDES permit requirements. The SHARON system
features:
A nitrification/denitrification process designed to
handle high strength ammonia side streams
A system that provides dependable, consistent partial
or total overall plant nitrogen removal
A unique nitrite reaction path that minimizes the oxygen
and methanol requirements for nitrification and denitrification
A system that requires no clarification equipment for
the side stream process
Minimization of overall plant tank volume requirements
Minimization of overall mixing and mass transfer power
requirements, especially when used with the latest mass
transfer technologies
Improved overall process stability
A system ideally suited for either retrofit or new plant
installations
Cost effective nitrification upgrade technology for
any plant capacity
Proven, full scale technology with numerous operating
plants in Europe
